Requirements for Naturalization

  • Be 18 Years Old
  • Be a Green Card Holder for 5 Years
    *3 Years for Spouses of Citizens
  • Meet Residency Requirements
    *Exceptions for military members
  • Meet Physical Presence Requirements
  • Read, Write and Speak Basic English
    *Exceptions apply for long term residents
  • Pass U.S. Civics Test
  • Be a Person of Good Moral Character

WAIT! Not everyone qualifies for citizenship. You may be ineligible for citizenship due to a criminal conviction, a past mistake on your green card application, or spending too much time outside of the United States. Apply for citizenship has its risks: you may end up losing your green card and being removed from the United States. HOWEVER! There are protections available.
